Eggs Food Allergy

Food Allergy | Allergies | Intolerance | Symptoms | TreatmentEggs are the common cause of a food allergy and can be found in many processed and ready made foods. Often hens are fed grain coloured with carotene dyes to make the yolk more yellow and the food allergy may be a reaction to the dye instead of the actual egg. If you have a food allergy to eggs you may also havea food allergy to chicken, caused by the meat itself or the chicken feed, such as corn and wheat.

Avoiding Eggs

Foods containing eggs come in many varieties such as cakes, pastries, biscuits, batter, mayonnaise, sauces, powdered products, mousse, egg pasta, ice cream, mincemeat, wine and beer. You will need to read food labels closely as egg can also be listed as albumen, ovalbumin, lecithin or emulsifier.

Alternatives to Eggs

Egg replacements are available together with "egg-free" versions of popular foods, although these may use synthetic substitutes. If you have an egg food allergy then you should try to avoid eggs altogether.
